How To Save Data While Watching YouTube
The most effective approach is to reduce video quality when high resolution is unnecessary, enable YouTube's data-saving options and prevent the app from using mobile data for features you do not need.
1. Reduce YouTube Video Quality
Video quality is one of the main factors affecting how much data YouTube uses. Watching in 1080p or 4K generally consumes more data than watching in 360p or 480p.
To reduce video quality while watching:
- Open the YouTube app and play a video.
- Tap the Settings icon in the video player.
- Select Quality.
- Choose Data saver or Advanced if you want to select a specific resolution.
- Select a lower resolution, such as 360p or 480p.
For most phone screens, 360p or 480p can provide a reasonable viewing experience while using less data than higher resolutions. If you are mainly listening to a lecture or watching a video where picture quality is not important, you can choose a lower resolution.
2. Set YouTube To Use Less Data By Default
Changing the quality of one video does not necessarily change the settings for every other video. To avoid repeatedly adjusting the resolution, set a lower default quality for mobile networks.
Follow these steps:
- Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Video quality preferences.
- Under mobile networks, choose Data saver.
- Set your preferred option for Wi-Fi separately.
With this setting, YouTube prioritises lower video quality when you use mobile data. You can still select a higher resolution for individual videos when necessary.
The available menu names may differ slightly depending on your version of the YouTube app.
3. Turn Off Video Playback In Feeds
YouTube can automatically play video previews as you scroll through your Home feed and other sections. These previews may consume mobile data even when you have not deliberately opened a video.
To reduce this usage:
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile picture and select Settings.
- Look for General or Playback in feeds, depending on your app version.
- Select Playback in feeds if available.
- Choose Off or Wi-Fi only.
Turning off playback in feeds prevents videos from playing automatically as you browse. This is particularly useful if you spend a lot of time scrolling through YouTube recommendations.
4. Turn Off Autoplay
Autoplay allows YouTube to start another video automatically when the current one ends. If you leave your phone unattended, several videos may play and consume data without you realising it.
To turn it off:
- Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Find the Autoplay option.
- Turn off Autoplay next video.
You can also use the autoplay switch in the video player when available.
Disabling autoplay gives you more control over what plays next and helps prevent unnecessary data consumption when you finish watching a video.
5. Download Videos Over Wi-Fi
If you regularly watch the same tutorials, lectures or other videos, downloading them over Wi-Fi can help you avoid streaming them repeatedly with mobile data.
To download a video:
- Connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network.
- Open the YouTube app and find the video.
- Tap Download if the option is available.
- Select your preferred download quality.
- Wait for the download to finish before disconnecting from Wi-Fi.
You can then open the Downloads section in YouTube to watch saved videos offline.
Download availability depends on the video, your location and whether a subscription is required. In Nigeria, some videos can be downloaded through YouTube's offline feature, although not every video is available.
To prevent downloads from using mobile data, open Settings, select Background & downloads and enable Download over Wi-Fi only.
6. Restrict YouTube Background Data
YouTube may use mobile data for background activity when the app is not actively open. Restricting background data can help reduce this usage, although it does not prevent data consumption when you are watching videos.
On many Android phones, follow these steps:
- Open your phone's Settings.
- Select Apps or App Management.
- Find and open YouTube.
- Tap Mobile data & Wi-Fi or Data usage.
- Turn off Allow background data usage if the option is available.
The exact steps depend on your phone manufacturer and Android version.
Keep in mind that this setting does not stop YouTube from using data while you are streaming videos. It limits background usage when the app is not in active use.
7. Enable Data Saver On Your Android Phone
Android's system-wide Data Saver feature can help reduce mobile data usage by restricting background data for many apps.
To enable it:
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Select Network & Internet, Connections or Mobile Network, depending on your device.
- Look for Data Saver.
- Turn it on.
Some Android phones place this option under SIM settings or Data usage.
Data Saver can limit background activity, but YouTube will still consume data while you watch videos. For better results, combine this feature with YouTube's video quality settings.
8. Monitor How Much Data YouTube Uses
Checking YouTube's data consumption helps you understand whether your settings are working and how much of your data allowance the app uses.
On Android, open Settings and look for Data usage or Mobile data usage. Select App data usage if available, then find YouTube to view its consumption during the selected period.
You can also set a mobile data warning or limit if your phone supports it. This can help you avoid exhausting your subscription unexpectedly.
Remember that your phone's data counter and your network provider's records may not always show exactly the same figures.
9. Avoid Streaming In High Resolution When It Is Unnecessary
Higher resolutions provide sharper images, but they are not always necessary on a small smartphone screen. Choosing a suitable resolution can help you reduce data consumption without making videos difficult to watch.
For example, try 360p for casual viewing, 480p for a clearer picture or a higher resolution when you genuinely need the extra detail. The amount of data saved depends on the video, its length, frame rate and compression.
Live streams can also consume substantial amounts of data, particularly when watched for long periods. Lowering the quality before joining a live stream can help you manage your data allowance.
10. Use YouTube Settings Alongside Your Data Plan
Your viewing habits also affect how quickly your data runs out. Watching shorter videos, avoiding unnecessary replays and closing videos when you finish can help reduce consumption over time.
If you regularly watch YouTube for learning or work, consider downloading eligible videos over Wi-Fi when available. You can also check your mobile network's data balance periodically and set a data warning on your phone to keep track of your usage.
Save More Data Without Giving Up YouTube
You do not need to stop watching YouTube to reduce your mobile data consumption. Start by setting video quality to Data saver on mobile networks, turning off playback in feeds and disabling autoplay. These changes can reduce unnecessary usage while giving you more control over what plays on your phone.
For additional savings, restrict background data, use Android's Data Saver feature and download eligible videos over Wi-Fi for offline viewing. No single setting prevents all data consumption, but combining these methods can help your data last longer while you continue watching the videos you enjoy.
