Phone Storage Is Not Full But The Phone Is Slow: What To Check
Free storage is only one factor that can affect phone performance. RAM usage, background apps, overheating, software problems, battery condition and demanding applications can also make a phone slow.
If your phone has enough storage but is still not performing properly, here are the things to check.
Check Your Phone's RAM
Storage and RAM are not the same thing.
Storage holds your apps, photos, videos and other files, while RAM helps the phone handle apps and processes that are currently running.
A phone with limited RAM can become slow when several apps are open or running in the background. This can happen even when the phone has plenty of free storage.
Close apps that you are no longer using and check whether the phone becomes more responsive.
Restart Your Phone
Restarting the phone is one of the simplest things to try when performance suddenly becomes poor.
A restart closes running processes and gives the operating system a fresh start. It can also resolve temporary software problems that may be causing the device to lag.
If you have not restarted the phone recently, restart it and check its performance afterwards.
Check Apps Running In The Background
Some applications continue working in the background even when you are not actively using them.
Messaging apps, social media platforms, browsers and other applications may use RAM and other system resources while running in the background.
Check which apps are active and close or restrict unnecessary background activity where appropriate.
Check If The Phone Is Overheating
Heat can affect how a phone performs.
When a device becomes too hot, it may reduce its performance to control its temperature. This can happen while playing demanding games, recording videos for a long time, using navigation, charging the phone while using it or leaving it in direct sunlight.
If your phone feels unusually hot, stop demanding activities and allow it to cool down before continuing to use it.
Install Available Software Updates
Software problems can sometimes cause poor performance.
Check whether an operating system update is available for your phone. Manufacturers regularly release updates that fix bugs, improve compatibility and address other software problems.
You should also keep your installed apps updated because an outdated app may not work properly with the current version of the operating system.
Check Recently Installed Apps
If the phone became slow after you installed a particular app, that application could be responsible.
Some apps may use significant system resources or contain bugs that affect performance.
Think about when the problem started and whether you recently installed or updated an app. If there is a clear connection, try uninstalling the app temporarily and see whether the phone improves.
Clear The Cache Of Problematic Apps
An app can sometimes become slow or behave incorrectly because of cached data.
On Android phones, you can usually clear an individual app's cache through the app settings. This can help when one particular application is slow, freezing or behaving unusually.
Clearing an app's cache does not normally remove your account or personal files from the app.
Check The Battery Condition
The condition of the battery can also affect phone performance.
An ageing battery may not perform as well as it did when the phone was new. Some phones can also reduce performance when battery health has significantly deteriorated.
If your phone is several years old and you are experiencing both poor battery life and slow performance, check whether the manufacturer provides a battery health or diagnostic feature.
Remove Unnecessary Widgets
Widgets and other continuously updating features can use system resources.
If you have many widgets on your home screen, particularly ones that constantly refresh information, try removing the ones you do not need.
You can also disable unnecessary live wallpapers and other constantly updating features to see whether the phone becomes more responsive.
Check For Suspicious Apps
A newly installed or suspicious application can sometimes cause unusual performance problems.
If the phone became slow after installing an app from an unfamiliar source, consider removing it. You should also use the security features available on your device to check for potential threats.
Avoid installing applications from unreliable sources because they can introduce security and performance problems.
Check Power-Saving Settings
Power-saving modes can change how your phone operates in order to reduce battery consumption.
Depending on the device, a power-saving mode may restrict background activity or reduce certain performance features.
If your phone became noticeably slower after enabling a power-saving mode, check the settings to see what restrictions have been applied.
Keep Enough Free Storage Available
Although your phone may not be full, it is still important to maintain a reasonable amount of free storage.
When storage gets extremely close to its capacity, the device may have less room to work with for system processes and applications.
Remove unwanted videos, downloads, documents and apps if your available storage is becoming very low.
Find Out If One App Is Causing The Problem
If the entire phone is not slow but only certain apps are affected, the problem may be with those applications rather than the phone itself.
For example, if your browser is slow while other apps work normally, check the browser's cache, updates and settings.
The same approach can be used for social media apps, messaging apps, games and other applications.
Avoid Using Too Many Demanding Apps At Once
Running several demanding applications at the same time can put pressure on your phone's available resources.
Games, video editors, cameras, browsers with many open tabs and other resource-intensive apps can use significant amounts of RAM and processing power.
Close applications you are not using before opening another demanding app, especially on a phone with limited RAM.
Consider A Factory Reset As A Last Resort
If the phone remains slow after checking the possible causes above, a factory reset may be considered.
However, this should be one of the last options rather than the first thing you try.
A factory reset removes your apps, personal files, accounts and settings from the device. Back up important information before proceeding.
If the phone is still slow after a clean reset, particularly if it is an older device, the hardware itself may be reaching its performance limits.
Free Storage Does Not Always Mean Good Performance
Having plenty of free storage does not guarantee that a phone will run smoothly.
RAM usage, background apps, overheating, software problems, battery condition and demanding applications can all affect performance.
So, if your phone storage is not full but the phone is slow, check these areas before deleting more files or performing a factory reset.
